posted 02/06/2010 Lacrosse Families and Players,
The 2010 spring lacrosse season is less than seven weeks away. Practice starts in less than three weeks. We have a few registrations, but not enough to field full teams yet. So let’s get our players registered now! Please note that players may not participate in practice unless they are registered with the Spotsy Lacrosse Club. Registration is mandated by not only the Spotsylvania County Lacrosse Club, but also by the Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League, US Lacrosse, and our insurance provider. Please register now so we can identify how many teams we can field and start filling out rosters.
Spotsy Lacrosse wants every child in the area to have the opportunity to play the greatest sport around. We understand that in these difficult economic times, some families may feel they may be unable to afford registering their children to play with the Spotsy Ravens. We feel that families and players should be able to enjoy lacrosse regardless of financial situation. If you are considering not registering your child because of financial hardship, SCLC asks you to reconsider and please register your child. We can help with financial assistance, alternative payment options, and loaned equipment. If you believe you may need financial assistance, contact us at
. All financial assistance matters are held in strictest confidence. Please allow us to help provide the opportunity for your family to be part of the Spotsylvania Ravens. Let’s get our players registered to play now!

The Spotsy Lacrosse Club has renewed its interest in starting a girls’ program this year. SCLC has been in contact with families whose daughters are currently taking part in the Field House girls’ lacrosse clinic and have shown a great interest in playing outdoor lacrosse.
Spotsy is currently looking to establish girls’ youth teams at the U-11, U-13, and U-15 levels this season. The Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League has multiple skill divisions within each age group, so we would place the teams according to the experience level of the players. We have former women’s high school and collegiate lacrosse players who are interested in coaching, so our teams would be developed under competent coaches.
Both the boys and girls lacrosse seasons would begin practice the week of 22 Feb with games starting the week of 28 Mar. Because the start of the season is only a few weeks away, we would really like know if your daughters would be interested in playing with the Spotsylvania County Lacrosse Club and if you would be willing to help us establish the girls' program. Additionally, if you know of any friends or family who would like to play, we would love to contact them. The more players we get the better.
Before we can move forward, we must have at least 16 girls interested per team. That is why we ask that your daughters talk to their friends and you speak with other families who may be interested. We already have ten girls interested in playing, but we need more to establish teams.
If you are or anyone else is interested in playing/supporting girls' lacrosse this season, please contact BJ Wroten at
.
Thanks for supporting youth lacrosse in our area and let's succeed at opening up this great sport to the young ladies of our area.

As a result of the success of our lacrosse helmet sale last year, we are doing it again. In the online store, you will find the Cascade CLH2, CPX, and Pro7 lacrosse helmets on sale. Our good friends at Bones Lacrosse have graciously extended the same prices from last year. All helmets will be ordered with a silver shell, black or silver facemask, and purple visor. If you desire a different color combination, contact the online store representative at:
before making your purchase.
Last day for helmet sales will be Feb 13, 2010 with pick up available at the first practice the week of Feb 22nd. We will gauge the interest later in the season for an additional purchase, but there is a minimum order to qualify for the discount. So we recommend you order now!!
Please visit the SCLC online store at www.leagueathletics.com/Store/Store.asp for item description and purchase information.

posted 01/29/2010 Ravens,
The Club has received questions about the high school-level Junior Varsity team. The Club is not waiting to make a decision on whether to field a JV team or not. The ability to field a JV team depends on the number of high school level players who register. The average number of players on a team is 18-25. Teams do not want to go much lower than 18 because games become very taxing with a limited number of substitutions. Going above 25 starts to limit the amount of playing time. So, SCLC must have at least 36 players registered for the high school level program before a JV team can be considered.
High School freshmen under 15 have the option of registering for U-15 or the high school program. As we get closer to the season and if we are short the number of players to start a JV team, the Club will ask those high school freshmen registered for the U-15 team if they would consider playing on the JV team instead. If we still do not have enough players to have a JV team, all players registered for high school will play on the Varsity team.
If we have enough players to field varsity and JV teams, tryouts will be held to determine which players will be placed in which teams. Team determination will be based on lacrosse skills, athleticism, field sense, and knowledge of the game. Evaluations will be done by experienced players and coaches who do not have sons registered for the high school program. All seniors will be placed on the varsity team.
To help ensure we do not run into challenges creating a JV team we ask that you please register as early as possible. Also, if you know any families or potential players who may be interested in trying out lacrosse, please tell them about how great a sport lacrosse is and have them visit our website (www.spotsylacrosse.org) for information. Interested families and players can always contact us
.
Thanks for supporting your Club and let's get enough players to field multiple high school-level teams.

posted 01/03/2010 Happy New Year to the Spotsy Lacrosse family!!
The Spotsylvania County Lacrosse Club is well into its preparation for the Spring 2010 season. You probably received emails from Coach Rocco providing information about off-season lacrosse training opportunities. As Coach mentioned in a recent email, now is the time to get in shape for the upcoming season.
We have made quite a few changes since the 2009 season. You may have noticed new items on our website. SCLC is now directly linked to US Lacrosse. You can now access instructional videos, coaching tips, and lacrosse news right from our site. The US Lacrosse tab at the top of the page will link you to important information on the US Lacrosse website. There is a link specifically for parents that we recommend you visit. Also, our registration program links you directly to US Lacrosse to process your membership immediately.
Speaking of registration, Spring 2010 player registration is now open for our U-9/11, U-13, U-15, and High School programs. Please click on the 'Online Registration' tab above or on the left to register. It is imperative that you read the registration notes as SCLC registration and team policies have changed since the 2009 season.
Although we do not have a girls' lacrosse program, we are making progress in the expansion of the sport in the local area. SCLC has affiliated with the Rappahannock Girls' Lacrosse League and the Stafford Lacrosse Club to ensure young women in our area have the ability to play lacrosse. If you wish to find out more, please select the 'Girls' Lacrosse' button on the left.
For our future volunteers, you will see a call for coaches and team/club representatives in the next few days. There are several coaches education opportunities scheduled over the next few months. They are free and open to all who wish to learn more about coaching the game. You will see announcements shortly.
SCLC is looking forward to supporting its club members with improved services and events. These will include formal affiliation with the Positive Coaching Alliance, opportunities to attend NCAA lacrosse events like the Face-Off Classic and NCAA Championships in Baltimore, and new club merchandise. Stay tuned for more news and club updates in the upcoming weeks.
Have a great 2010!
Mark D'Amico - SCLC President
Anita Long - SCLC Vice President
Gary Spruill - SCLC Secretary
BJ Wroten - SCLC Treasurer
